Pre & Post Prostate Surgery Queenstown

Men who undergo surgery for the management and treatment of prostate cancer are expected to experience some level of urinary incontinence during their recovery. Continence pads, catheters and sore testicles are all to be expected in the post operative period. Leakage may be minor and last a few weeks or it may continue for up to 12 months. This can be overwhelming, but thankfully we know that bladder control does improve over time after surgery, especially with the help from physiotherapy.

The pelvic floor muscles work to control the bladder and maintain continence. Just like any other muscle, if we understand how to exercise them properly we can improve their strength and ability to stop urinary leakage. We suggest you learn to exercise your pelvic floor muscles prior to your operation it often leads to better performance post operatively.

We can teach you to correctly exercise your pelvic floor muscles by using real time ultrasound to visually show you the lifting action during a correct contraction. This can really make a difference in your exercise program and recovery!
